The seventh grade class is studying perspectives on poverty and typical stereotypes that are associated with impoverished people. They are creating t-shirts that portray the good qualities of the impoverished people. They are doing this by artistically placing words that build people up rather than pulling them down on their t-shirts. The seventh grade class is visiting Urban Ministries where they interact with the people there and try to overcome any harsh stereotypes. They accomplish this by creating physical labels with bad labels written on them, and also labels that are associated with good qualities. These good qualities also are used as conversation starters and help people recognize the good qualities in people rather than the bad.
"A thing that helped me relate to people and get more comfortable was the tags. After people write on them I would read them. Most of the bad names I understand and might have been called. When I read the good side I could look closer and imagine the goodness in the person." -a seventh grade student
